The DL-103 upgrade
The upgrade focuses on the two parts that most directly shape the cartridge’s contact with the groove: the stylus and the cantilever.
Nude hyper-elliptical stylus
Compared with the original conical stylus, the nude hyper-elliptical profile gives the DL-103 a more precise contact with the groove.
The upgrade is intended to improve fine-detail tracing, inner-groove composure and textural definition while preserving the weight, density and direct musical character listeners value in the DL-103.
Boron nitride cantilever
The boron nitride rod replaces the original aluminum cantilever with a lighter and more rigid mechanical path.

A wooden body for your DL-103
The body does more than protect the cartridge: it holds the generator and couples it to the headshell. The energy the diamond does not turn into signal travels up the cantilever into the body, and the body’s material decides what becomes of it.
A hard, very dense wood brings both mass and a natural damping that a plastic body does not have. With the upgrade, the original body can be replaced by one of three woods.

Huanghuali grows only on Hainan island. It is the now rare wood of classical Ming furniture: hard, heavy, rich in oil. Ours is the darkest grade, called purple-oil.

The generator, fixed in its wooden body
The original body is removed, and the generator is transferred into the wood and fixed there, as part of the upgrade. Prices are per cartridge, on top of the upgrade. Mention the wood you would like when you request the upgrade.

The Upgraded Denon DL-103 remains a low-compliance moving-coil cartridge. It is best matched with heavier tonearms, MC phono gain or a suitable step-up transformer.

The DL-103 remains a low-compliance moving-coil cartridge and is best suited to heavier tonearms, MC gain or a suitable step-up transformer.
Stylus life depends on setup accuracy, record cleanliness, tracking force, handling and hours of use. The DL-103 tracks at a higher force than most modern cartridges by design, so with clean records and correct setup the nude hyper-elliptical stylus typically serves 600 to 800 hours of listening before renewal. From around 600 hours, we recommend a stylus inspection: we examine the cartridge under the microscope and advise before any work is quoted.
Typical turnaround is approximately eight working days, beginning after your cartridge has arrived, the inspection is complete and you have approved the confirmed scope. This excludes inbound and outbound shipping time. We do not guarantee an exact completion or delivery date.
The Upgrade Service carries a 12-month craftsmanship warranty covering the installed cantilever and stylus assembly, the bonding and fitting workmanship, and defects directly attributable to our intervention. It does not cover normal stylus wear, accidental damage, incorrect setup, work by third parties after return, pre-existing donor-cartridge faults, or parts not included in the confirmed work.
You arrange and pay for shipment to our Shanghai atelier. After the work is completed successfully, Le Son returns your cartridge Delivered Duty Paid, with return delivery, customs duties and import taxes handled by us. For valuable or irreplaceable cartridges we agree an insured route and shipping responsibility with you before you send anything.
