Before You Buy

Most questions before ordering a cartridge come down to one thing: will it work well in my system?

This page covers the essentials around tonearm compatibility, phono-stage matching, cartridge selection, and ordering with confidence.

If your question is not answered here, please contact us directly and we will be happy to help.

Compatibility & matching

  • Can any cartridge be used with any tonearm?
  • What tonearm effective mass works with Le Son cartridges?
  • How do I check if my system is a good match?
Can any cartridge be used with any tonearm?

Not ideally. A cartridge and tonearm should be matched so that their resonance falls in a healthy range, typically around 8 Hz to 11 Hz.

Both compliance and effective tonearm mass matter. If you are unsure, share your tonearm model with us and we will gladly review the fit.

What tonearm effective mass works with Le Son cartridges?

The LS10 MKII family and SL1 MKII are generally intended for medium-mass tonearms. The Upgraded Denon DL-103 is usually more at home in heavier arms. Exact fit still depends on the full setup, including headshell weight, mounting hardware, and phono-stage context.

How do I check if my system is a good match?

The most reliable way is to share with us your turntable, tonearm, and phono stage model. We can then review the likely mechanical match, electrical fit, and gain structure before you order.

Phono stage & gain

  • Do I need an MC phono stage?
  • What loading and gain should I use?
  • Will a different loading value change the sound?
Do I need an MC phono stage?

For the LS10 MKII, LS10 MKII “S”, LS10 MKII “G”, and Upgraded Denon DL-103, yes. The SL1 MKII is the exception. It is a high-output moving-coil cartridge designed to work with standard MM phono stages.

What loading and gain should I use?

As a starting point:

  • LS10 MKII: 75 ohms minimum, standard MC gain
  • LS10 MKII “S”: 75 ohms minimum, standard MC gain
  • LS10 MKII “G”: 20 ohms minimum, roughly 70 to 78 dB, or a suitable step-up transformer
  • SL1 MKII: MM input, standard MM gain
  • Upgraded Denon DL-103: 100 ohms or above is a sensible starting point, with standard MC gain

If your phono stage allows adjustment, these values can then be refined by ear.

Will a different loading value change the sound?

Yes. Loading can influence tonal balance, openness, control, and perceived dynamics. This is one reason why full system context matters, especially with more demanding cartridges such as the LS10 MKII “G”.

Choosing the right cartridge

  • I am not sure which cartridge is right for me. Can you help?
  • What if I choose the wrong one?
I am not sure which cartridge is right for me. Can you help?

Yes. The best recommendation depends on your tonearm, phono stage, gain and loading options, and listening priorities. If you share with us your current setup and objective, we will suggest the most suitable direction.

What if I choose the wrong one?

Le Son offers a 60-day home evaluation on cartridges, so you can assess the cartridge in your own system.

Return eligibility still depends on the product being in fully functional condition and returned with its original packaging and accessories. Return shipping remains the customer’s responsibility.
